PRIVATE: SPOTLIGHT ON BRAZIL BREAKFAST

The urgency of now cannot be overstated. With each COP, we find ourselves asking the same of the presiding nation: to be ambitious and bold in their leadership. We ask the same each time G20 countries gather, urging those nations to submit earnest Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Yet, the scale of action we desperately need has yet to be realized. With the approaching G20 and COP30 in Brazil, there is an opportunity to align and consolidate agendas to ensure the convenings reinforce the strength of one another and represent the most impactful commitments and action over the next 18-months and beyond.  This brunch creates an opportunity for us to constructively discuss not only  what we ask of Brazil as G20 President,  upcoming BRICS President and COP30 host, but how we need them to lead and set the agenda.

We ask Brazil to respond through their leadership to the urgency of now by committing to bold NDCs and by doing all they can to ensure their G20 counterparts do likewise.

They must:

Lead by example: Brazil should demonstrate what they are asking of others in the G20 by committing to ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). All G20 members need strong, actionable NDCs, especially in mitigation, to significantly reduce emissions. The G20 nations collectively contribute over 80% of total CO2 emissions per year, so their action is crucial.

Innovate and inspire: Brazil has already made strides in promoting climate finance solutions, and to see the change we need to see in the next five years then finance solutions must be visible, credible, ambitious and innovative. We urge them to accelerate these efforts and inspire fellow G20 countries to follow suit. Continuing to push for rapid innovation and commitment in climate finance is essential for global progress. This innovation and ambition needs to be baked into NDCs and country level regional and local plans, and in all plans gendered considerations should be made explicit: we know that ensuring these considerations are locked-in on paper means countries can better access and mobilize climate finance to meet the needs of their whole populations.

Brazil must respond to the urgency of now by being a beacon of hope and leadership in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss.
