Women globally are extremely vulnerable to falling into food insecurity, with women and girls making up 60% of the 690 million food insecure individuals worldwide. Women are more likely to work harder and eat less in the absence of adequate food supply, taking on more unpaid hours and giving up meals for others to make familial ends meet. Providing women and, thus, their families access to a nutritious and balanced diet is a cornerstone of transforming society at a fundamental level.
WOMEN’S FOOD INSECURITY IS A LARGELY OVERLOOKED ISSUE.
Women’s food insecurity is a largely overlooked issue – in a CARE analysis of 73 global hunger reports, only 46% acknowledged women and girls at all and less than 7% proposed gender equality measures in support of food security.
